After the failed assassination attempt on the Appel Quay, the Black Hand Gang dispersed. Several members took cyanide pills to avoid arrest but these were out of date and didn't work. Then they jumped in the river which wasn't deep enough. All were arrested.
Gavrilo Princip managed to avoid this and headed to Franz Joseph Street where he bought lunch in a delicatessen. In the meantime, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife changed the route of their journey through Sarajevo, leaving the City Hall to visit the wounded in hospital. The route took him along Franz Joseph Street. Realising that there were in the wrong place, the Archduke's driver went to reverse. At this moment, Gavrilo Princip emerged from Schiller's Delicatessen and saw the Archduke's car in front of him. As he was dying from tuberculosis he felt he had nothing to lose and took his gun from his pocket, shooting the Archduke and his wife at point blank range. Both the Archduke and his wife died and Princip was immediately arrested.
